AGE 55

Official-source summary

What happens to my CPF at 55?

On your 55th birthday, a Retirement Account (RA) is created. Savings from your Special Account (SA), followed by your Ordinary Account (OA), are transferred to the RA up to your Full Retirement Sum (FRS). Your SA is then closed and any remaining SA savings move to your OA.

  • RA savings earn the same long-term interest rate as the SA and are used to provide your monthly payouts in retirement
  • Savings above the FRS remain in the OA and are withdrawable
  • From age 55, the maximum top-up you can receive in your RA rises to the Enhanced Retirement Sum (ERS), for higher payouts

Starting early

I thought CPF was a problem for my 50s. It isn’t.

I came along with my parents expecting to be bored. Instead I realised the retirement sums are a target I can start working towards now, not at 55.

Retirement sums

BRS, FRS and ERS stopped feeling like alphabet soup.

The practical examples made BRS, FRS and ERS feel less intimidating. I left knowing which questions to ask about my own situation.

Starting early

Retiring for 30 or 40 years suddenly felt very real.

The point about Singaporeans living past 100 stuck with me. If I stop work at 63, my money might need to last longer than my career did.

CPF LIFE

I understood why the three CPF LIFE plans exist.

The comparison of CPF LIFE payout options helped me understand why retirement planning is not one-size-fits-all.
